Okay, having cut my teeth years ago on analog tapes, then taking a step back, getting married, having kids and stashing my tapes away, I found the archive about 2 years ago. Since then I have found so much newly released stuff (15 years since I last collected any music, so most of the pre 75 stuff is new to me), that my brain was blown away. For the last 2 years I have collected 100's of shows, through friends, etree, etc etc. With the massive wealth of new music before me, I find myself listening to a different show everyday. I rarely if ever go back and give a 2nd listen. Oh sometimes I do, 2-14-70, 11-11-73, and a few others, but for the most part it's always something new. Doing this limits my attempts to talk about any one show in particular or even a certain piece of music within a show. Sometimes I feel very lost when I read posts about certain songs, and how each of you can analize and break down passages of music, when all I can do is just wiggle in my chair to each new show I listen to everyday. Does anyone else do this? Or for the most part do the majority of you, listen to favorite shows over and over again? With so much out there, I just can't seem to slow down to any particular period for now. Does everyone go through this when discovering the Archive? Just wondering I guess.

The avalanche of Dead Music , and multi tasking,does make it easy to mass consume the music, and hear , but not listen . I usually go back, and re-listen to the jams , and special songs , before I file a show away . Since I am in the period of getting lots of it , and I do listen to other music, mainly jazz, and classical ,
I don't tear into a particular period , as some folks can do here . I greatly admire their knowledge and perception ( think Cliff's Europe 72 work, or any of LIA's deep tomes )! , but that level of focus is beyond my abilities .
I plan, some day to go back, and go period by period , but for now ...yesterday , a 73 show, today a one from 84 ...

is this Archive a grand and glorious thing?? i listen to something that comes up on this day in history. Then i also load a few shows from all eras, and let the player choose the show. I also have a ton D/L in a separate drive to savour at my leisure. There are few I go back to like, Grateful Dead Live at Fillmore East on September 20, 1970. I guess what i'm getting at what GD i listen to each day comes from all over!!
God bless the good ol'Grateful Dead, the Archive and all that sails her

Peace:Skippy

SDS , there is no certain way to do anything here regarding one's own way to approach IA . That's why this motley collection that we are , loves this music . I could wax poetically ( or blather on and on ) about the sense of freedom , the way of perceiving design , or that adventuresome spirit GD music has opened for me . This literal forum is limited to mostly text . That's a very narrow way to express the scene , but it's what we have - and I'm thankful for it . I am a little jealous of you because sometimes I can not turn the head off and " wiggle in my chair " . It was really bad when I'd find that type of guy at a show and we would brake the show down , in progress , like a baseball game . When I first came here I went on a massive listening binge , for years . I did not even care about the forum , I just read the reviews of shows . Then I watched , as many do , the scene here for a long time before posting . If you can't stop then go , baby , go to 6 - 24 - 70 ( NFA on ) or 10 - 12 - 68 :}

I mix it up between listening to favourites and exploring new shows. I love to revisit my favourites as they reward repeated listening but I try to balance that with exploring the unknown as there are always new pathways and hidden delights to discover. Sometimes I'll jump around seemingly at random in terms of era while other times I will be focused on a particular decade/year/tour. I find it very satisfying to listen to an entire show but sometimes I'll just pick out individual songs or sequences at whim and create my own flow.

Hey SDS,I often wondered about folks listening habits here on the Archive.I've been listening for about 34 years and got my first computer two years ago when I retired,my goal once familiar with the site and it's content was to listen to and review every show beginning with 10/19/71 (Keith's 1st) through 12/31/79.Having done that I've started 68' through 8/26/71 (last show before Keith).I'm about 30 shows short of finishing that run,in total about 730 shows give or take a few.It was such a trip at first to click on a show that used to be just a list in Deadbase and now it's coming out of my stereo speakers,oft times in top shelf quality.I had a nice collection,about 1200 hours on cassette,but this was site was mind boggling.It has been a really interesting way for me to reconnect with music that I love.

Sounds like exactly what I do -wiggle in my chair and go "oooh" and bookmark stuff and make lists and lose them, jot down dates of shows on yellow stickies and scatter them all over my desk and follow conversations where I'm way over my head, and the conversation goes a dozen other places while I've been listening to one show or sometimes one SONG.
My notes say things like "Wow" or "Don't lose this one" and I have no idea what they're about later.

We have the same genes! I note things, lose them, run out of ink in my printer making cd covers, and burn discs without labels for weeks. Work daily, listen to CD's in my car, and go ohhhh ahhhh and omg, come home, listen to the meat of the show, file the CD's and never listen to it again, 'cause I'm doing the same thing the next day to a completely different show. Such unorganized fun!
